Stankard Stone was founded by Sean Stankard a third generation stone mason who learned the traditional skill of stone masonry and natural building stone from his father. Starting out on his career and eager to broaden his skills Sean specialised in plastering and block laying.

Stone building became more popular in the coming years and Sean founded Stankard Stone in 1985. At first most of his work consisted of house facings and walls and piers.
In the late 80’s he branched out into landscaping, creating all types of water features and bridges. Some of Sean’s work can be seen in the top gardens and golf courses in the country.

In 1992 Stankard Stone was contracted by one of the top architects in Ireland; Martin Hallinan to showcase his works in the Citywest Industrial Estate in Dublin and also the National Stud and Japanese Gardens in Maynooth, Co Kildare. His work can be seen today as the main feature attraction at St Fiarcha’s garden in the National Stud.
The company grew and expanded and several skilled and trained stone masons joined the team. In 1993 Stankard Stone were awarded a contract to one of the country’s leading Civil Engineering Contractors Pat Mulcair/ Roadbridge.This project consisted of the construction of stone walls on a major road infrastructure project. It involved many restrictions and logistical constraints with regard to building in this area. Sean came up with a solution to design and produce precast walls for the project which were then transported and installed at the site in Drogheda. Over 3.5 miles of precast wall units were delivered to site in 10 weeks.

Still used to this day these precast wall panels and piers are constructed in his production yard in Cappataggle, Co Galway and transported to sites all over the country. This means clients can have their walls/ piers or any other stone feature delivered and constructed in one day.

Over the years Sean and his team have perfected the traditional skills of dry stone walling and hand dressing as well as using modern techniques such as precast walls to achieve a high quality product.
